Prompt arrival at 4:45 AM is necessary to observe the bats before they become inactive at sunrise.
For the very first time, we are offering a unique opportunity to adventurous early risers. Join researchers from the Illinois Bat Conservation Program and geneticist Jordyn Chace as they look for bats returning to their roosting spot at the Covered Bridge before sunrise. Participate in the researchers’ work collecting fresh guano for DNA testing. With the help of thermal imaging cameras, we will catch a glimpse of the heat signatures of the bats. Bring a camping chair if you have one. Dress for the weather and temperature. You will be guided on a 0.4 mile paved path between the parking area and the Covered Bridge. Instructions about where to enter and park in the preserve will be emailed after registration.
After the field experience at the Covered Bridge, coffee and pastries will be provided inside the Museum of the Grand Prairie. Get your burning bat questions answered, learn about the research, and discuss bat ecology with the scientists.
