Geocaching and Letterboxing

Geocaching and Letterboxing are adventurous outdoor activities for all age groups. If you like hunting for treasure, have good orienteering skills, and love the great outdoors, these activities are for you and your family. Best of all, you can play right here in East Central Illinois on Champaign County Forest Preserve District land and elsewhere.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure-hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups.

Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining artistry with treasure hunting that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues to their prize: a rubber stamp, often hand-carved, to stamp into one’s own personal logbook. To start finding boxes, all you need is a clue, which you can find at It's also recommended that you have a signature stamp, a logbook, an ink pad, and something to write with.

We hope that while you are here you take time to enjoy all of the things we have to offer at the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. Bring a picnic lunch, walk your dog, enjoy playgrounds, and hike through prairie and woods. The treasures the great outdoors have to offer are not always found in containers.
